Corks + Caftans

Pio Pio, NYC: Red wine showdown + flashing lights.

August 18, 2009 Leave a Comment

Pio Pio is an exceptional chain of Peruvian restaurants in Manhattan [x3] & Queens [x3] & the Bronx [x1] & a new location opening in Hell’s Kitchen. The atmosphere is lively, loud, and happy.* The portions are heaping, delicious, and beautifully accompanied by classic sauces. The fried plantains had us all rudely reaching across all corners of the table, and the BYOB policy got us out at a reasonable price.

They seem to have a lot of birthdays here, and it’s understandable why. [See video at below.] Serious festivity!

Speaking of BYOB (or BYOW, in our case), we brought a 2005 Heller Estate Cab and an Abbot’s Table from 2007. The Abbot’s Table was the clear favorite (and a past favorite of mine), but given the powerful flavors and the lingering spice of the food, the Heller tended to hold up with some vigor.

Definitely stop by a Pio Pio if you’re in the city and looking for a low-key option (and you’re hungry). Nothing like picking apart a chicken carcass after beating the pavement for a day. Talk about bang for your buck.

*Funny I called it “happy.” On the website, there’s a tab for “Casa Alegra” which explains that it’s roughly translated to “Happy House.” Which it definitely is. Enjoy!
