[The only outfit I want to wear anymore. I wish I loved all my clothes as much as I love these four things together.]
This isn’t the first military-style jacket to make its way into my closet. Nay, it’s not even the second. But it’s definitely the best.
In my quest to only buy things that bring me complete joy, that are able to take everything else I already own and make me fall in love with it all over again, something missing was a medium-weight piece out outwear. I got that other bad boy with the sort of crazy sweaterwork in the back, but it was a little limiting. [In a bid for solidarity, this one has a crazy back, too—a print of mermaids that says “La Mer”!]
Enter my first ever purchase from Mother—and a new favorite brand to add to my wishlist. I dig understated, semi-masculine and covertly sexy, and that’s Mother in a nutshell. Silky cadet blouses with bold typography on the back, ripped up jean mini skirts (haven’t had one of those since 2003), and straight jeans with racing stripes up the sides—damn.
p.s. am I too late to buy stepped-hem cutoff jeans?
It’s light enough to wear in the 70s down in Florida, and with enough layers, works into the 40s up here in VA. Below that, it gets a little nippy—hence the 3/4 season rating. But where my black leather jacket only clocks in a 2/4, this is a win. It also has just enough details—the old-school M with lightning bolts that looks like it belongs on the side of an electrical box on a base in M*A*S*H and some arm bars—that I can still get away with adding a few pins to feebly attempt to copy Megan’s dope jacket.
Oh, and I did some other shopping for myself this season, ahem:
Nine Roses is a local boutique here in Richmond that sells super fine (as in, not cheap, and also gorgeous) jewelry from an array of lesser known designers. I can’t say I’ve ever seen such a fantastic collection of unique pieces under one roof before. I thought catbird was the shit—but this is next-level stuff.
The candle is brewed by local company Square Trade Goods Co. and the necklace is oxidized silver and gold with a little ruby nestled in the dagger—gah, can’t remember designer. But it was sort of a massive impulse purchase inspired by something Megan said that really hit home with me. Something along the lines of: “Wouldn’t it be nice to get to a certain age and success level and come to a place like this and add really beautiful, really legit pieces to your own jewelry collection?” And I was like, Yass, woman.
It’s like weeding out the excess, the stuff, the things, the people in your home, closet and life who aren’t bringing you joy, that are cluttering up your aura, and whittling it down to only include the best of the best.
And when it calls for it, commemorating all that hard work with a token that won’t tarnish.
Oh yea, and I went and spent a ton of great QT with my fam last week. See?! Shorts and jacket—totally worked! (Also: debuting my fourth in the Rag & Bone floppy brim fedora family. And it’s shell pink—crazy.)
