Corks + Caftans

YSL ethereal goodness.

February 13, 2017 Leave a Comment

Sometimes, though not often, I permit myself to scan through images from runway shows and look at the things I cannot and will never be able to afford. This usually seems pretty pointless, given I need to be putting energy toward finding new ways to love the things I already have. In some instances, I can cobble together similar looks from my own closet, but in cases like this, it’s purely to admire the artistry and fantasy of it all.

Or is it?

Below I picked my favorites from the YSL runway show—maybe to serve as a little reminder that clothes can be playful still and that Hepburn-esque femininity never goes out of style. This is so far off track for me I had to chase it down the rabbit hole.

Exhibit A. Celestial sweaters over my favorite fabric on earth, tulle. The little gold stars and embroidered words are whimsical and adorable and remind me of Le Petit Prince, or this weird old music video from French pop artist, Matthieu Chedid (“M”).

Exhibit B. More tulle, but monochromatic this time around. And the look on the right? I’m dead. Guys I really want to be able to pull that off. (I have a black tulle skirt just like that… O.G. copycat C+C outfit post, anyone?)

This embroidery is no joke. It looks like illustrations in a children’s book! Geahd.

Another variation, ruffled and gathered—and again I’m going to need that whole thing on the right. (Have combat boots! I’m smelling another recreation.)

Lest we forget the Parisian origins of the line, they tossed in some simple feminine things anchored with delicate flats. Legs for days, ladies.

Then, a bit of contrast. You know I love a weird bit of bondage-inspired fashion, and the trench is perfection. In fact, I just took my old Burberry one to the dry cleaner—it was destined for eBay, but now I think I might hold on to it a bit longer.

Setting aside that this is couture, and that I typically only wear t-shirts and jeans, I’ll never be too removed from fashion to be immune to inspiration. If anything, it can shake you out of a routine.

The punchline here: When you place a lot of important on not looking like every single other person in a room but then find yourself in a brewery surrounded by 75 other 25-35 year olds in identical army green jackets and dark jeans and booties, it’s like a wake up call. I needed a little palette cleanser like a spring RTW runway show.

That brewery full of clones situation made me want to snap my fingers and be in a satiny, drapey nude trench coat, a black camisole, ripped jeans, and pointy flats. So this post couldn’t have come at a better time.

Stay tuned.
