Corks + Caftans

July 4th recap, 2010.

July 6, 2010 13 Comments

Proud to be… aborigine!

We did it old school, pioneering out onto Saratoga Lake on the hottest day so far this year looking for a little relief. How Pocahontas worked it in a suede tunic, I’ll never know.

Rob visibly hesitated next to the canoe before we shoved off. Being so cosmically in-tune with my mate, I said, “Don’t worry. If there are spidies, I will dispose of them.”ย And we were off.

I’m less embarrassed to own the clunky “boat soled” mocs, now that they are so key to my newest outdoor hobby. Speaking of, I’ve learned better than to make jokes about Indian-related social issues. Once, at a Halloween party where I knew only 1 person, I was standing with a group of guys who were admiring a Pocahontas costume. Through the course of this admiration, 3 of the 4 mentioned they’d dated her.

“Sounds like Pocahontas has been pokin’ around!” I chuckled. The fourth glared at me and said, “That’s my girlfriend.” I was thrown out a half hour later. So… bite your tongues!

If you read last year’s July Fourth Recap post, you’d know we get a little cross-cultural confusion this time of year. In keeping with that tradition, I made typical French cafe fare: Croque Monsieur.

Hope you all had a huge, happy fourth. And if you’re like me—and you wiped a few tears away during the fireworks while singing The Star Spangled Banner under your breath—you did.

    I just muttered “I haven’t talked to them in a while…” following ALex’s “I love them”…
    So….
    Happy 4th you two.
    Love to you both.

Your style on all things good is pretty appreciated over here. Even if we have been less noticeable on the web as of late.

    Peace and Love.

So freaking jealous of your concert experience with one of my current favorite bands ever. Looked fantastic. Stay cool out there, enjoy your summer and stay in touch! Pocahontas-ish and boozy vibes coming to you from NY

Oh trust me. We were NOT cooled off… at all. it’s a heat box on the damned East Coast… I’m claustrophobic! At least you can go dip your toes in the frosty Pacific.

Glad you like those ugly little kicks. I got them in Taos, New Mexico 6 years ago and they’ve been my kick-around shoes, but I would never have dreamed of wearing them with any fashionable inclination.

*cue Mary Kate Olsen getting photog’d wearing them 3 times recently in Malibu…. aannd…. they’re back.

I had a pair of those same ones in blue when I was fourteen! I have a picture of me riding my horse bareback in them. I LOVED those shoes. I wore them with Guess ankle jeans (this is really aging me) and Forenza sweaters from The Limited.

I just saw a pic of MK wearing them in Malibu today too. See, you are always ahead of the curve!

How are you beating this heat? I know I bitched and moaned all winter about the cold, but a little moderation from extreme temperatures would be nice. ๐Ÿ™‚
