Corks + Caftans

The art of dining alone.

April 11, 2011 3 Comments

Requesting a table for one has never been a real issue for me; I like the time alone to sip my drink and let my eyes go out of focus for awhile. I’m usually lost in thought anyway; at least this way I’m not being rude to anyone.

But, as my twice-weekly commute over to NY grows less bearable and more staggeringly expensive, taking myself out to lunch between legs of sitting has become a ritual, and a total treat. I’m perfecting the art of dining alone.

I had sangria, a salad, and an amazing bartender to give me just the right amount of company at Max London’s…

…a post-run burger and beer at the Local: more great bartenders, people lining the bar on either side…

…nursed a salad and a glass of Sauv Blanc in a window seat at Cantina on a rainy Monday…

…and listened to a saucy break-up story at that table yonder…

…and today, washed down lunch with a cold Bud Light draft at Stadium Cafe—first day I noticed they had the outdoor tables set up, so I soaked up the 75 degrees and tried to remember what everything felt like when we lived a block away.

Obviously, smart phones are totally cheating when dining alone. I’m working on that part.

I like to sit at a bar alone – well, not totally alone, as I usually have a mag or book with me – but nonetheless, there is something thrilling about it. That burger looks amazing, btw.

You make solo dining look extremely enjoyable. Asking for a table for one is not an easy thing to do at first. Also, nice to see those familiar Color of a Sidecar lights.
