Listen, I wouldn’t normally do this to you. But I have a point to prove!
It wasn’t even 4 days ago when Rob, Mary and I were sitting in New York Deli, munching sandwiches in (exhausted) silence, facing Cary Street and watching the passersby. To alleviate the immediate need for conversation (seriously, so exhausted), we made up a bit of a scavenger hunt: I spy the hipster fashions of Carytown.
- Wayfarers w/ neon arms
- Those aqua sock-y things with separated toes
- A mutt on a leash
- Man in cut-offs to the knee
- Girl in athletic shorts (irony!)
- Man in tank top
- Man in stretchy handband
- Calf tattoo
- 100% regrettable tattoo
Oddly enough, Umbros (or similar athletic shorts) were the easiest spot; since, I’ve been unable to stop spotting them. In my coming and goings around RVA this summer, the number of girls wearing a veritable rainbow of athletic shorts to various social venues has boggled. my. mind. Apparently, this hasn’t changed since 1993, when I was sporting the exact same thing with concert t-shirts to the pool. Only the soundtrack appears to have changed.
I has a watering can, and an itchy nose:
You’re probably wondering about the regrettable tattoos, right!? Think: flaming ying yangs, then close your mind to the possibilities.
Basically, I had no idea how “on trend” I was (for the territory) when I bought these suckers out of complete, swamp-ass prevention necessity earlier this summer. But, I mean… with some Miu Miu platforms, a little Haute Hippie softness, and a giant headscarf? Hilariously enough, I reach for a variation on this every morning, unless required to do otherwise.
So there you have it. When in Rome.

love the song and the shoes and the shorts and the scarf!
Wow! It’s crazy how what’s in can vary so much from one area of the country to another. I’ve
never seen those in California… yet.
