Corks + Caftans

Gunpowder and comb-overs.

September 21, 2009 Leave a Comment

We spent the past weekend in Wilmington, DE for my cousin’s wedding. Aside from not infrequent renditions of this Wayne’s World scene, we lived it up: arrived 2 hours late for the rehearsal dinner, endured two days of hangovers, and cruised the Hagley Museum to see the history of the du Pont company. I stood inside a real space suit. It was awesome…

It was such a beautiful day. As my blood sugar plummeted, we got on a bus to hitch a ride up the hill to the du Pont family mansion for a tour. A creepy gentleman with a greasy comb-over sat in front of my brother, Charlie. Moments later my phone buzzed—a text message from my brother saying “Captain Combover!” I exploded into giggles. Comb-over looked at me and gave me a good-natured smile.

Rob pointed out the little mole poised in the comb-over part and I texted it back to Charlie, who thought I meant an actual mole—like, the animal. Thankfully, the bus stopped to drop us off a second or two later before our laughter got too suspicious.

There were lots of chestnuts on the ground, their early descent from the trees marking what will be a terrible, cold winter. (Damned global warming!) Charlie threw one at my leg and it left a bloody puncture hole. Unable to learn my lesson, I picked up one to throw back and was nursing the wounds to my finger tips for hours.

That’s my gorgeous sister-in-law in the background, laughing at me because… well, I’m standing on some railroad buggy. High-five for railroad buggies!!

If you ever get a chance to be in Wilmington and don’t mind being uncool for a few hours, I suggest a trip to Hagley. And avoiding the bus when you can. The walk along the Brandywine is stunning.

Congrats to Lindsay and Mark who are now living it up on St. Lucia.
